GPS vehicle tracking systems are more affordable and more popular than ever before, but do you need one? Take this short quiz and keep track of your ‘yes’ answers. I’ll help you total your score and decide after you finish.

Step One: Take Quiz

1. Do I use vehicles in my business? Yes/No

(The definition of ‘vehicles’ includes heavy, medium and light-duty vehicles, construction equipment (dozers, graders, backhoes, etc), cars, motorcycles, RV’s, pick-up trucks, vans, tractor trailers, buses, trailers, dump trucks, snow plows, limousines, taxis, etc.)

2. Have any of my vehicles been stolen in the past? Yes/No

3. I’d like to know what is going on and where my employees/vehicles are during the day: Yes/No

4. I’d like to reduce my fuel expenses and know if any of my vehicles are wasting gas: Yes/No

5. Being able to give my customers accurate and precise arrival/delivery estimates is important to me: Yes/No

6. It is important to know if any of my vehicles are used after hours or on weekends for non-business purposes: Yes/No

7. I’d like save up to 30% on my vehicle insurance: Yes/No

8. It is important to know if my employees are speeding or otherwise abusing my vehicles: Yes/No

9. If any of my employees are using my vehicles to ‘moonlight’ or do work without my knowledge, I’d want to know: Yes/No

10. Knowing about mechanical problems before they become expensive to fix is important: Yes/No

11. If any of my vehicles are ever stolen, I’d like to locate them within minutes: Yes/No

12. I’d like to have vehicle use data to compare with overtime requests as a way to guard against errors and fraud: Yes/No

13. I’d like a reminder when it is time to do routine maintenance on my vehicles: Yes/No

14. Occasionally, customers question when we were at their location, having the exact date and time recorded in our tracking system would really help in those cases: Yes/No

15. I’d like to help my employees be more productive by seeing where they go each day: Yes/No

Step Two: Total Your ‘Yes’ Answers

Add up your ‘yes’ answers.

* Fewer than 7 ‘yes’ answers:Thanks for taking the quiz, you don’t appear to want/need a vehicle tracking system.

* 7 to 11 ‘yes’ answers: Thanks for taking the quiz. You could greatly benefit from a vehicle tracking system.

* More than 11 ‘yes’ answers: Thanks for taking the quiz. You need a vehicle tracking system.

By the way, every question above (except question 1 & 2) is answered by using GPS vehicle tracking systems.

Step Three: Cost vs. Gain

The average business owner recoups their investment in GPS vehicle tracking systems within 6 – 12 months after purchase. Of course, your ROI may vary. Recovering one stolen vehicle may pay for your entire tracking system.

Vehicle tracking helps you reduce operating costs and boosts productivity.

Tracking systems reduce vehicle costs by putting a spotlight on speeding employees, who waste fuel, cause excessive engine wear and drive up insurance rates. Vehicle tracking systems will also remind you when it’s time for preventive maintenance, like oil changes, helping you keep your vehicles on the road and making you money.

GPS vehicle tracking systems improve productivity by:

* documenting long lunch hours,

* exposing unauthorized breaks,

* comparing driver overtime requests with system reports of driver activity,

* highlighting unauthorized vehicle use after hours and on weekends,

* eliminating driver logs.

Many insurance companies offer discounts of up to 30% for vehicles protected with tracking systems.

Step Four: Due Diligence

GPS vehicle tracking systems are outstanding tools for vehicle and fleet management, but you need to find the right system for you. Take a look at the different types of GPS vehicle tracking systems.

Check a company’s hardware and software, as well as their monthly data access plan. You’ll also need to decide whether to buy or lease your GPS tracking system.

Good luck.

Super-expensive gas is here to stay. Drivers are in a scramble over how to afford their morning commute. They’re resorting to a number of solutions, some the result of fuel economy technology in the form of hybrid vehicles, others steering for quick-fix gadgets carrying a high price tag and dubious claims.

Don’t downgrade from your favorite ride into a sub-compact clown car! Stay away from fuel saving gimmicks, too. There are simple ways to save gas, increase gas mileage and stick it back to the greedy barons stealing your spending cash.

Improving Air Flow

A great place to start when looking to increase gas mileage is with your vehicle’s air filter. It is by far the easiest performance upgrade around, and the quickest way to increase gas mileage.

If you’re still lugging around town with a disposable paper air filter, you must toss it in favor of a performance air filter. A disposable paper air filter is incredibly restrictive to airflow, a restriction which essentially chokes your engine. Compare this to a performance air filter which uses either cotton or foam filtration material. Air flows much easier through these performance air filter materials which puts plenty of oxygen into your engine for burning fuel. With the extra air on hand, your engine’s computer responds by using less fuel per air part.

But wait – there’s more. The bountiful airflow puts extra horsepower at the pedal for your driving pleasure. Not to mention the cleaner air volumes now entering your engine, which contribute to overall vehicle condition. Be careful, though. Overusing the power boost provided by a performance air filter will negate any mileage improvements.

Improving Aerodynamics

Ever feel like something is holding your truck back? Surprisingly, it’s probably your tailgate. Passing air rushes over your truck’s cab and flows directly into your open bed. With nowhere else to go, the turbulent air crashes into your tailgate – catching your truck like a trout that swallowed the hook.

Adding a tonneau cover to your otherwise exposed truck bed provides a tight surface for airflow to blow right past. Without a drag-prone tailgate to slow your truck down, you can see an average gas mileage improvement of 5% to 10% immediately.

If you’d rather not get a tonneau cover, or need full uncovered bed access at all times, consider an air-flow tailgate. drag is reduced immensely, thanks to a mesh or louvered design that allows turbulent air in your truck bed to slip right through the gate.

Though studies show the gas mileage improvement is not as dramatic as adding a tonneau cover to your ride, air flow tailgates will show an immediate gas mileage improvement that exceeds unsafe driving with the stock tailgate down.

Tire Pressure Effects

If you’re getting worse gas mileage than usual, check your tire pressure. If your tires are under-inflated, your vehicle has to work that much harder to spin them. The friction caused by these flabby tires could be sucking your gas mileage by 2mpg or more. Not to mention the premature tread wear that will cost you serious cash down the road.

Check your pressure with a digital tire gauge for the best possible accuracy. The recommended pressure for your tires is usually given on a label inside your door well. If they’re low, fill them up at most any corner service station and check the pressure again with the digital tire gauge. Under-inflation can have cash-swallowing consequences, but over-inflation is just as bad for your wallet.

Sharpen Your Shop Skills

The overall health of your car contributes greatly to the gas mileage you’ll see throughout its life. Follow the regular maintenance schedule for oil changes, tune-ups and inspections. Don’t keep driving your vehicle if something is blatantly screwed up! Get the problem fixed, and it’s less likely to drain your gas tank.

The joy of recreational vehicle ownership hasn’t been dimmed by rising gas prices. As late as August of 2005 recreational vehicle sales were seeing only a very small affect of rising gas prices. Sales of recreational vehicles in 2004 were the highest see in twenty five years. The popularity of recreational vehicles doesn’t seem to be waining at all. In fact, there is an RV and MV (Manufactured Vehicle) hall of fame located in Elkhart Indiana.

Today’s motor homes or recreational vehicles have all the comforts of home, and then some. With luxury leather recliners, granite floors, washers and dryers, plasma TV’s and looks of professionally designed spaces recreational vehicles are a stylish and comfortable home away from home.

There are several different types of vehicles considered “RV’s”. The first is a truck camper which is a unit affixed to the bed or chassis of a pickup truck. Then there is the folding camping trailer, or pop-up trailer. A travel trailer is a unit that is towed by another vehicle. A fifth wheel travel trailer is designed to be towed by a pickup truck. A motor home or what is frequently called a Winnebago which resembles a bus.

The process of purchasing a new recreational vehicle is somewhat like purchasing a new car. A recreational vehicle dealer will sometimes take advantage of an uniformed customer. There are huge markups on recreational vehicles by all dealers. The only way to come out with a fair deal is to do your homework before you buy.

There are several fixed prices when you are looking at new recreational vehicles. The dealer price, the taxes and any motor vehicle fees. As with a car, the only option left for the dealer is to play with the profit margin. As recreational vehicle dealers sell way less than car dealers do they must make a much higher profit margin per vehicle. As it is widely known that used recreational vehicles have a huge depreciation you don’t want to overpay for your vehicle.

By Chad Slayton

When you get a new car from your Fort Worth ford dealer there is something important you should have in your mind. The car will need regular maintenance to ensure that it is always reliable. Just like your body needs a regular health check-up from your doctor, so does your car. History has taught us that prevention is always better than having a cure. Hence maintaining your car will protect it from regular breakdowns. Even with hard economic times, there are certain areas regarding vehicle maintenance that you cannot ignore.

The first thing you should do to ensure your vehicle stays in good condition is by changing the engine oil at the appropriate time. How long the oil will last for depends on the oil type you are using. There are three oil types available in the market namely synthetic, conventional and full-synthetic. If you are using conventional oil, you need to replace it after 3,000 miles. For a synthetic oil blend, you have to change your oil after 5,000 miles and in the case of full-synthetic oil, you can go for 10,000 miles. Failure to change the oil when the threshold is reached can lead to complex problems such as oil seal problems and engine sludge. Oil sludge is the main cause of engine damage that leads to leakages. It will also add extra costs for having your engine flushed. Sometimes a problem that could have been prevented with a simple oil change will lead to complex problems that require the vehicle to be tied down in the auto repair shop for weeks.

Another area that should be properly monitored is the fuel system. Although newer Ford vehicles do not rely on in-line fuel filters, older models still use this system. If your car uses this system, you should replace it after 19,000 to 29,000 miles. Replacing the fuel filter in time ensures the fuel pump lasts longer. There are also fuel injector cleaners available in the market that you can use to clean your filters. For better results, replace the filter before using the cleaners. You should also check the fuel type you use since fuel injectors usually clog due to regular use of cheap gasoline. Cheap gasoline contains waxy oilfins which, when accumulated, leads to clogging. Good quality gasoline contains detergents that prevent deposition of the oilfins.

Another area that should be properly maintained is the cooling system. Before going for a cooling system service, be sure of the type of anti-freeze your vehicle uses. Most of the new cars in Fort Worth have long lasting anti freeze compounds that last up to five years if the vehicle is used only for normal driving. However, these compounds are expensive compared to the ordinary anti-freeze compounds. Your car manual should indicate when it is best to go for the replacement.

Finally, the belts and hoses should be replaced at least once every two years. This however does not mean you have to wait until the two years are over and they are showing signs of wear. The best time to replace them is every 100,000 miles regardless of their condition since most belts start fail at this time. If you keep these points in mind, your car will remain in a good condition for years.

There have been times lately when I have almost wished that my car would get stolen so that I would have a great excuse for needing another car. However, after toying with this delightful thought, my dreams were soon crushed by the fact that I am pretty sure that having my car stolen wouldn’t mean anything to the car insurance company as I would probably still be responsible for paying some or all of what was previously owed on the vehicle.

Having your car broken into is not a great experience at all. However, having your car stolen is even worse. I say that having your car stolen is worse because, for most people, owning a car is their first major investment. In fact, some people easily spend upwards of $30,000 on a single car! This number doesn’t even begin to include all of the extra money that you would have to factor in for things such as car repairs, oil changes and gasoline expenses. By the time that all is said and done, you have probably paid the equivalent of owning a small house except for the fact that it is on four wheel.s

When I was a police officer, one of the major patterns that I was finding with stolen vehicles was the fact that most often than not, the vehicles were being stolen from a particular area during a particular time and that criminals were targeting a certain type of vehicle. For instance, in one area where there were numerous reports of cars being stolen, criminals were only stealing older model Honda Accords. In another area where cars were being stolen, people were too trusting and friendly (or perhaps forgetful and lazy) because they weren’t locking their car doors. In a couple of cases, people had their cars stolen right out of their garages because they had left their garage doors wide open!

Even if you think that you live in the nicest neighborhood in the world, and even if you in fact live in the nicest neighborhood in the world, crime is immune to that fact. Some things that you can do in order to protect yourself from having your vehicle stolen include making sure that you try to leave your car as empty as possible at all times. For instance, some people (and I have been guilty of this before) will leave valuable such as their wallet or their iPods and GPS systems, etc. in their vehicles…IN PLAIN SIGHT! This is just begging someone to come along and with one glance, see exactly what goodies you are tempting them to take.

Always try to park your vehicle in a well-lit area, and perhaps you should also invest in a car alarm. If you own a house, this may involve installing motion censored lighting on the exterior of your home as a way to deter criminals from entering the perimeter. There are all sorts of things that you can do to safeguard yourself against crime. That being said, what are you doing to prevent your car from being stolen?

When you are getting ready to go somewhere or are preparing to arrive somewhere, you need to make sure that everything in your vehicle is secured in an area that is not visible to outsiders who may be walking by your car and looking in the windows.

Ideally, when you want to go out anywhere, and you are driving your personal vehicle, you should always make every effort to secure everything in your car before you leave. The reason for this is because criminals will often scan parking lots or other common areas and will actually watch people as they sit in their cars and fidget around while they try to hide whatever it is that they don’t want you to see. However, what they don’t realize is that it is too late; someone is watching where they are putting their various items.

There are various items that people carelessly leave out in their vehicles such as cell phones, loose change or actual paper bills and jewelry to name a few. Why jewelry, you may wonder? The simpler explanation for why this is most often an occurrence is due to the fact that when many people go to the gym or go to a park to exercise, they will often take off their rings, earrings, bracelets and/or necklaces so that they are less restricted while they exercise or work out. However, what they often fail to realize is that jewelry is something that you should really take care of ahead of time at home. For example, if you know that you want to attend the gym to work out and you are not a person who likes to wear jewelry while you exercise, make sure that you store it before you get into your car. If you, for some reason, prefer to keep it in your vehicle, then at least make sure that you bring an opaque bag to put the items in, or at best, place your jewelry out of sight in an area of your vehicle that is covered such as your glove box, under your seat or in the middle console area (if it is covered).

There is no reason why you shouldn’t secure your vehicle. Whenever you exit your vehicle, you should always conduct a quick, last minute scan of everything inside of the car to make sure that there is nothing tempting that is left out- even things that you may not think are tempting to a thief. When I was a police officer, I responded to call of a car break in. It turns out that the person had just come back from the laundry mat and had a bunch of clothes careless thrown in the back seat of their car. The person who broke into their car walked by and glanced in the window. Seeing all of the clothing strewn about, the thief actually thought that the person was trying to cover something up, and therefore, the thief broke into the car. Whenever you are traveling somewhere, make sure that your car is locked and that you leave your vehicle looking as empty as possible so that no one is even remotely tempted to break into it.

By G Jenkins

If you’re buying a used car, you can never predict whether your bargain is going to be a good or a bad one. Despite the repeated promises made at the time of purchase, there is always a chance that you’re caught in a bad deal. However, like every other purchase, there are always ways to find out if you’re being cheated.

The following are a few things that you’ve got to take note of when you’re buying a used car. Some of the more important things to do include:

• One sure way of knowing whether you’re being handed a bad car is trying to read the mannerisms of the owner. The owner of a bad vehicle will avoid answering your direct questions or will hide certain details regarding the vehicle. On the other hand, if the seller is direct and friendly, it is a sign that the vehicle it a good one. However, going simply by the personality of the person is not enough, because there are some glib talkers who can manage to sell you a bad car by hiding its faults with ease. So you have to take a few more steps to ensure that you’re making a good buy.

• The next precaution you should take before finally buying it is checking whether all the main parts and systems are in great condition. Everything has to be checked, right from the scratches of the body, to the air conditioning system. You must also check the windows, the stereo systems and the gears. Don’t hesitate to conduct a thorough check, you’re buying the car, after all, so you have every right to play the radio or switch on the air conditioning to see if they work.

• A good idea would be to look at the paint of the car carefully to see if it’s been repainted or comes off at places. Sometimes, damaged cars are totally rebuilt after an accident and then resold. A good way to check if this is the case with the car you’re eyeing is by looking at the gas tank. If there are traces of re-coloring or scratches in that area, the car has surely been repainted. It is better not to buy the vehicle because it’s bound to run into problems later.

• Getting a warranty for the car is also another way of ensuring that you’re buying a good vehicle. If you can get a one month warranty, it will give you enough time to test the capabilities of the car. If your car repeats any of its older problems during that period, you can easily take it back and refund the money. This is also a good way of knowing if the car is good. The dealers who will back their cars and give you a warranty are generally selling good cars; whereas, if the dealer refuses a warranty, it may mean that the car is damaged.

You can also get a second check done on the car through another agency to know for sure that it is in perfect condition. This can cost you anything from 20 to 50 bucks, but you will be aware of the true condition of the car. A second testing also means that you will know of any existing problems, and also about the impending ones, if there are any. In the end, you can make a better decision on whether you’re being charged a decent price for the car.

If you happen to be visiting or live in North Carolina, you may possibly pass a car on the road that resembles the cockpit of an airplane without the airplane. By all means remain calm; you have not passed the remaining wreckage of an airplane. You really haven’t passed a car either. If you by chance glance through the window, you will notice that this unusual vehicle has handlebars like a motorcycle instead of a steering wheel. So it isn’t a car. But it looks like a car so it really can’t be a motorcycle. But what is it? You have just passed a Peraves Ecomobile!

As gas prices sky rocket from high to astronomical and a wavering economy reduces discretionary income the public is searching for ways to save money. This plus pressure from environmentalists to go green is motivating companies to seek alternatives to the gas hogs of the past and present.

And they are trying to do this without sacrificing the speed and power Americans are fond of. The American public wants an automobile that can reach high speeds, go from 0 to 60mph in seconds and still get 20 or more miles to a gallon of gas. So the challenge is to offer low fuel consumption while maintaining speed and acceleration. The Ecomobile is one response to the challenge.

The Ecomobile is manufactured by the Swiss company Peraves. Although it does use fossil fuels it has a low rate of fuel consumption. The Ecomobile is also available in the United States. It is distributed in the United States by a dealership located in North Carolina.

The Ecomobile is a combination automobile/motorcycle, or a modified motorcycle with an automobile body. The wheelbase resembles a large bicycle with training wheels, while the body looks like the cockpit section of an airplane.

The Ecomobile is powered by a rear-mounted liquid cooled in line 4 cylinder BMW K series motorcycle engine that can achieve a top speed in excess of 155 mph. And it can accelerate from 0 to 100 miles per hour in 5.7 seconds. It produces 130 HP @8750 RPM.

The body is made of Composite-Monocoque manufactured from Kevlar and glass-weave bonded by Araldite Epoxy resin. It is reinforced by roll-and crash-protection-bars. The engine mount and steering head are in argon arc-welded aircraft-grade steel. It is equipped with aircraft-grade-steel supporting roll-axles.

The body has a gull wing door with integrated sunroof opening to the left. There is a baggage compartment in the rear.

This unusual vehicle weighs 1,014.1 pounds and is about 12 feet long by almost 4 feet wide. It is approximately 5 feet high.

Instead of a steering wheel, it is operated by motorcycle-type-handlebars with extended functions. The auxiliary brake lever and twist throttle are located on the right handlebar. The brakes are operated by the right pedal.

Interior amenities include two-color car style leather seats equipped with automatic safety belts. It has soundproof velour padding and black noise suppressing carpets. There is a self-locking baggage compartment cover complete with an integrated headrest.

Other comforts feature a heating and ventilation system with a three-stage blower, mirror defogging, seat heating and full air-conditioning. It has a Becker Mexico RDS audio system and GPS is available as an option. A CD player is another option.

Every effort has been made to make the body function and look like an automobile while the vehicle operates like a motorcycle.

With so many vehicles on the road today, they all seem to start looking alike. And most of us want to be different or have something different. It is sometimes hard to make a vehicle stand out from the crowd, and in a good way. You want to get your vehicle looking great and have other people notice that it looks great! There are a few things you can do to achieve this goal. With these aftermarket upgrades and great services you will get your vehicle shining above all the others on the road.

One thing you can add to your vehicle is window tint. Window tint is a tinted film that is placed on the windows of your vehicle. I am not sure why, but window tint really makes a vehicle look great. Not only does it make the vehicle look great but it will protect your vehicle from interior damage as it keeps the sun out. It can also help add more security and privacy to your vehicle. To add to all of those great things it can even safe you money in gas! Even with all these great benefits, window tint is affordable and can be installed in a very short time!

Also something else that you can do is getting your vehicles headlights restored. Many times headlights become cloudy, hazy or discolored. This is due to the oxidation that occurs from all the elements that your vehicle encounters. When your headlights look bad, your vehicle is not going to shine! They can easily be restored to original condition in a short time at an auto reconditioning shop. Not only the headlights look bad but they provide for unsafe driving conditions. This service is affordable as well, so don’t put this off.

The next upgrade is wheel rims. By adding new wheel rims or specialty wheel rims you can really get your vehicle to stand out. They can be a little expensive, but if you really want to get your vehicle shining they are a definite option to get there. Everyone may have the same vehicle as you, but if they don’t have the same rims, it is like a whole different vehicle. If you already have a nice set of wheel rims on your vehicle, make sure they look great. If you wheel rims have been damaged in any way you can get them repaired at an auto reconditioning shop. If they are scratched, scuffed, or dented your vehicles wheel rims are really holding your vehicle back.

Lastly, get your vehicle professionally detailed. A professional auto detailer will clean your vehicle inside and out. They will really get it shining with a great cleaning and a good coat of wax. Professional auto detailers pride themselves on returning vehicles to show room conditions.

Taking care of your vehicle and adding a few upgrades and services to your vehicle will really keep it looking great and help it stand out from the crowd. Find an auto body shop to take care of your vehicle today!

About the Author: If your car is in need of auto reconditioning start looking for a qualified professional to handle your concerns.
The most important part of owning a vehicle is making sure the vehicle is always secure. All newly manufactured vehicles come equipped with locks on the doors, child safety locks and a handheld security feature. The locks on the doors usually lock automatically when the car is shifted from park to either drive or reverse. They usually unlock when the car is put into park mode. Child safety locks prevent the children from opening the back door(s) when the car is in motion or even when it is standing still. The doors can only be opened from the outside when unlocked. This helps parents emotionally; knowing that their child cannot open the door if they are goofing off in the backseat.

One other security option that comes with most new and used vehicles is the handheld security device to unlock and lock the car from a distance. It is called a key fob. The key fob also has a panic button on it to set off the car alarm if someone is suspiciously near the car or if someone is following the driver and it feels suspicious or unsafe. The key fob can also have buttons on it to open a sliding door on a minivan or the trunk of the car. Some key fobs also have a remote start up button to start the engine of the vehicle without being in the car. Those are separate from normal key fobs and cost more for installation.

Not everyone who owns a car feels safe enough with the security features that come with the car so they decide to purchase security features on their own. Many drivers purchase a security feature called “The Club.” “The Club” is a metal club that hooks onto the steering wheel, making it immovable. This is in the event that a thief tries to steal the car. They won’t be able to operate the steering wheel since “The Club” has made it immovable.

Other security features are the use of On-Star, which can be installed in most new vehicles, from the General Motors family. On-Star provides directions, accident assistance and vehicle tracking features if the car is stolen. On-Star also offers a door unlocking feature for drivers that have locked themselves out of their vehicle. All On-Star call centers are open and operable 24 hours a day for all of their services.

Security features in vehicles today are also offered in the trunk. Most new vehicles have a trunk release button inside the trunk in the horrific event that someone is placed in the trunk during a carjacking or other violent attack. This enables the person to open the trunk from the inside so their air flow does not disappear and they can exit the vehicle when it comes to a stop.

All of these features are not offered on every vehicle, nor do they come standard on all vehicles. Most of them do come standard; such as the panic button on the key fob, the child safety locks and door locks. “The Club” can be purchased at any retail store and On-Star is installed in certain General Motors models.
