Price comparison site Confused.com has said there are a number of ways in which young drivers can save on car insurance.

Its comments follow the recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling that stipulates car insurance prices cannot be influenced by gender – something that may see women’s premiums rise in particular.

Claiming there are many ways drivers can save both before and after the ruling comes into effect, Confused.com suggests that purchasing a car that is not too costly to insure is a good step to take.

Meanwhile, ensuring the vehicle is fitted with modern security systems can also see premiums reduce.

And details such as what the car will be used for can also have an effect on insurance prices – for example, should the vehicle only be used socially, premiums are likely to be cheaper.

“Tempting as it may be to stick with your existing insurer, remember that there’s no reward for loyalty when it comes to car insurance,” comments head of car insurance at Confused.com Gareth Kloet.

Last week, marketing director at the company Mike Hoban described the ECJ’s ruling as a “gender tax” on women.

Low Cost Loans for Women Facing Increased Car Insurance Costs

9th March, 2011L In light of the European Court of Justice ruling, which found that car insurers cannot calculate premiums based on gender from 21st December 2012, leading loan provider www.flexcredit.co.uk argues that cash-strapped female motorists could take out a low cost loan to cover the increased costs.

Commenting on the new ruling and increased costs of car insurance, Ohad Hessel from Flex Credit says;
“While in principle gender discrimination in terms of car insurance is a good thing, in practice it will only mean premium rate rises for drivers, particularly female drivers who have traditionally benefitted from lower premiums than male drivers.
“But if insurers can no longer use gender to determine the risks involved when insuring drivers, they may have to increase rates for everyone in order to cover costs.
“For many female drivers an increase in car insurance premiums could not come at a worse time, as many already feel financially strained. Women traditionally earn less money than men and often occupy lower paid professions, which when combined with the extra cost of living, could lead many to feel financial strained.”
Research from the AA British Insurance Premium index comparing January 2008 figures for the average fully comprehensive car insurance premium with the same figure from the January 2011 found that the average car insurance premium has risen by almost £650 to £1,332 – a 94 per cent increase in the last 3 years.
Over the last year, premiums for a woman aged between 17 and 25 have risen by 34 per cent on average to £1,002 or by 70 pence per day. This is in comparison to a 12 per cent increase for men of the same age.
Continues Mr. Hessel:
“Many of us rely on our cars to commute to work and these increases in insurance costs could be the tipping point for many female drivers who are already struggling to afford to keep their cars on the road. An affordable loan could be the best option for anyone looking to cover these additional motoring costs.
“At Flex Credit you can borrow between £400 – £2,000 for a period of up to 12 months and you can repay your loan in easy to manage monthly instalments. And if your financial situation improves it is easy to increase your repayments at any time to clear the loan earlier without incurring extra costs.”

Tips to improve your vehicle’s fuel economy

With the price of regular unleaded gasoline topping $4 a gallon, auto information websites TrueCar.com and AutomMD.com have come out with a simple guide to get more mileage from your vehicle.

Drive smoother: Be gentle with your gas pedal and your brakes. There’s no reason to speed up to a red light just to slam on the brakes. Aggressive driving will lower your gas mileage.

Slow down: Most vehicles get the best fuel efficiency at 45 to 55 miles per hour. Driving more than 60 mph can cut fuel efficiency 7% to 23%.

Reduce idling: Turn off your engine if you’re waiting for more than 20 seconds. Idling wastes more gas than turning off your engine and restarting it.

Use lower-grade fuel: Regular unleaded fuel won’t hurt most vehicles even if premium unleaded fuel is required. Unless your engine starts to knock or ping when using a lower-grade fuel, stick to regular.

Remove excess weight: An extra 100 pounds sitting in the trunk or back seat can reduce fuel economy as much as 2%.

Turn on the ventilator and turn off the air conditioning: The most efficient way to cool your car is with the air that comes in through your flow-through ventilator. Air conditioning or open windows (because of the drag) make your vehicle less fuel-efficient. Driving fast with the windows open can burn more fuel than the air conditioner.

Replace or tighten the gas cap: Fuel evaporates through gas caps with broken or weak seals, potentially reducing your car’s mileage 2%.

Keep the tires inflated: Tires that are improperly inflated have a higher rolling resistance, which reduces efficiency. Keeping tires at the proper pressure can improve gas mileage much as 3.3%.

Change the oil: Energy-conserving or synthetic motor oil can reduce engine friction, improving efficiency as much as 2%.

Replace the spark plugs: Misfiring spark plugs can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30%.

  • Tips from CAA for avoiding damage during spring pothole season

Posted 4 hours ago

OTTAWA — CAA North and East Ontario suggests, to avoid pothole damage:

* Check your tire pressure regularly. Keeping your tire pressure constant can minimize damage to wheels and tires.

* If possible, don’t swerve to avoid a pothole. Swerving can result in the front wheel of your vehicle hitting the pothole obtusely, causing worse damage.

* Avoid sudden braking if you see a pothole. Braking transfers the car’s weight onto the front two tires, thereby increasing the severity of the damage.

Video reveals car at scene of blaze

It could be a witness, it could be the culprit sitting back and watching his dirty work.

Windsor police have released surveillance video of someone in a car skulking around the scene of February’s massive Walker Road fire -now officially an arson -just moments after the destructive blaze erupted.

The surveillance camera was attached to The Beer Store next door and pointed toward Walker Road and Richmond Street near the front of the fire scene.

“If that person’s not involved in it, they may well offer a good witness statement,” said Staff Sgt. Gerry Corriveau with the arson unit. “Something caused that person to go back. And that fire wasn’t burning at the front of the building, it was burning at the rear of the building. Somebody saw something, whether it’s the person responsible or a person that saw somebody hanging out front that perhaps looked suspicious.”

On Feb. 15, the fire destroyed the building at 1130 Walker Rd. that housed The Party Warehouse and The Clean Depot, causing several millions of dollars in damage. Minutes before the blaze, police said someone broke in through a rear door of The Clean Depot.

At 12: 58 a.m., the first burglar alarm went off inside the building. The key holder went to check on things, realized it was a fire and called the fire department.

Multiple motion alarms then started going off as the person, or people, moved through the building.

At some point someone set the fire, which then spread to The Party Warehouse and destroyed the entire complex.

Shortly after the fire broke out, a four-door sedan appeared on the surveillance video.

“At 1: 01, you see a car moving very quickly, going directly south on Walker Road as if leaving the scene,” said Corriveau.

“You can tell he’s going at a fairly high rate of speed compared to what the other cars are going.”

The car wasn’t gone for long.

“A short time later at 1: 06, what we believe to be the same vehicle comes back northbound on Walker Road, turns east on to Richmond and pulls into The Beer Store parking lot,” said Corriveau.

The car sits there for a few moments.

“Then he actually creeps forward to get a better view,” said Corriveau.

“Then you see Windsor fire arrive, and whoever he or she is leaves the area.”

Police ask anyone with information about the vehicle or the identity of the occupants to call the arson unit at 519-255-6700 ext. 4325 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-TIPS (8477).
